Scrap the Strap

Summer is fast approaching, ladies. It's time we address an issue of utmost importance: visible bra straps. Soon tank tops, halters, sundresses, and spaghetti straps will be rampant and with them, a most unfortunate accessory, visible bra straps (VBS). Don't allow this warm weather plague to infect you, my friends. If your girls are no longer perky enough to permit you to go braless when wearing these summery items, then please, please, PLEASE invest in a strapless bra or perform some other method of strap subterfuge. No one wants to see a cute little summer dress or sexy sleeveless number and then see your dingy, fraying bra strap crawling out from under it like some pillbug from under a rock! YUCK! Nuff said.

VBS with tank top (and Amy Winehouse is usually so classy!)

Tea Time! (and Food for Thought)

This is a post from Tim Wise, an anti-racist writer and activist. I couldn't have said it better, so I won't. To read the entire post, go to http://ephphatha-poetry.blogspot.com/2010/04/imagine-if-tea-party-was-black-tim-wise.html

"Imagine if the Tea Party Was Black" - Tim Wise

Imagine that hundreds of black protesters were to descend upon Washington DC and Northern Virginia, just a few miles from the Capitol and White House, armed with AK-47s, assorted handguns, and ammunition. And imagine that some of these protesters —the black protesters — spoke of the need for political revolution, and possibly even armed conflict in the event that laws they didn’t like were enforced by the government? Would these protester — these black protesters with guns — be seen as brave defenders of the Second Amendment, or would they be viewed by most whites as a danger to the republic? What if they were Arab-Americans? Because, after all, that’s what happened recently when white gun enthusiasts descended upon the nation’s capital, arms in hand, and verbally announced their readiness to make war on the country’s political leaders if the need arose.

Imagine that white members of Congress, while walking to work, were surrounded by thousands of angry black people, one of whom proceeded to spit on one of those congressmen for not voting the way the black demonstrators desired. Would the protesters be seen as merely patriotic Americans voicing their opinions, or as an angry, potentially violent, and even insurrectionary mob? After all, this is what white Tea Party protesters did recently in Washington....

Immigration and Cookie Dough

2 things that are just wrong: the new Arizona immigration law and eating raw cookie dough! Arizona has just passed a new immigration law that mandates law enforcement to stop and question anyone they "suspect" of being an illegal immigrant. It also requires legal immigrants to carry their papers on them at all times to prove their immigration status. Can you say "setup" for racial profiling and harassment? Que stupido! (did I say that right?) Whom do you think the police are going to suspect of being an illegal immigrant, Trevor Harrison Fairnsworth, III or Juan Jesus de Marquez? And whom do you suspect the police are going to hassle if found without id? Some yuppy WASP or a young hispanic guy? Why don't we just make all the hispanics wear big Hs pinned to their clothing to identify them like the Jews had to do in Nazi Europe? You gotta keep an eye on those foreigners, just sayin'.

Also, it's just GROSS to eat raw cookie dough! Hasn't anyone heard of salmonella! I know my husband, the doctor, has, but does that stop him? Every year, I buy cookie dough through school fundraisers, and have I gotten to bake a single cookie? No, I have not! My family eats the entire package of cookie dough raw. They like it better that way. Philistines.
